Medical eye exams: All new and existing patients will receive a yearly comprehensive dilated exam which includes screening for cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Examination of the retinal vessels also detects signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, vasculitis (infectious or inflammatory disease of the vessels), elevated intracranial pressure, anemia and malignancy.

Diabetic eye exam: All diabetics require yearly dilated exams by an ophthalmologist to detect diabetic cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. What we see in your retinal vessels is a good indication of how the vessels that supply your kidneys and feet are functioning.

Laser treatments: At North Shore Eye Consultants, we have our own YAG laser on site. This laser is used to remove scar tissue that commonly forms on the back of your lens implant after cataract surgery; also known as a secondary cataract. This laser is also used to perform laser peripheral iridotomy for the prevention and or treatment of narrow angle glaucoma.
We also have an SLT laser (selective laser trabeculoplasty) on site. This laser is used to treat numerous forms of open angle glaucoma, decreasing your dependence on topical drops.

Screening exams for medication related side effects: Many medications used to treat non-eye-related conditions require regular screening and ancillary testing for ocular side effects. Some of the commonly used medications that require routine ophthalmic exams are Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), steroids (oral, topical, nasal or injectable), Amiodarone, Ethambutol and many of the immune modulating drugs used to treat various cancers.

Contact Lenses: The inventor of the first contact lens was the famous artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. In the early 16th century, da Vinci described several forms of contact lenses, all of which were very uncomfortable. Fortunately, the industry has made great advances since that time! In our office, we stock a variety of sample contact lenses so that you may come in for a new fit or simply try on a new lens for comfort. We pride ourselves on being able to fit everything from soft contact lenses to bifocals, mono-vision and rigid gas permeable lenses. We offer competitive prices for purchasing contacts as well.
